HISTORY

DC Kostrena is situated in a building which is one of the first villas in Kostrena, It was built in 1938 by the family Mohović.

The villa was built at the beautiful location by the sea in sunny Kostrena and it has attracted many visitors. During the summer of 1947 and 1948 it was rented to Josip Broz Tito before the residency on the Brijuni was built.

Only later, when diving became a popular sport the reef in front of the villa with its depth of 46 meters as well as the fascinating underwater world was discovered. In 1961 the Federal Center for Underwater Research was established. It was the first organization in the Adriatic of that kind. That Center conducted the first study of the Adriatic seabed, discovered the sites of shipwrecks and other great charms of the underwater world. Also, in 1967, on the premises of the villa the first pneumatic spear gun was designed and patented. The Federal Center for Underwater Research organized the first world championship in orientation diving in Fužine.

In late 80-ies the Club of the underwater world activities Kostrena worked in the villa. The Diving Center Kostrena has been opened since 2004.
